82 Ocean Ave - An Owners Perspective...

Surrounded by Water, History and Beauty – 82 Ocean Kennebunkport

Being stewards of one of the most prominent iconic homes in Kennebunkport has been our privilege. Mornings we witness lobster boats head out to sea down the Kennebunk River from the front yard. Or watch the heron, red tail hawks and bald eagles swoop over the back cove as the sun rises. We actually installed remote control blinds in our master (above the gourmet kitchen), so with a click the world greets you with sunlight (or not - if you prefer). Coffee just tastes better by the water, the kitchen has prime eastern exposure on Chicks Cove, especially after an invigorating walk to Colony Beach.

Afternoons the wrap-around enclosed porch warms, I enjoy watching pleasure yachts come and go to the local marinas and yacht club. Sunsets here with a drink in hand is one of our favorite times. Greg loves “his” back patio, its equally entertaining with a gas fire pit and torches lighting the tidal cove. To say this house has ample and diverse social spaces is an understatement, you can follow the sun, or follow your mood – from social to serene.

Heather’s favorite activity is paddle boarding from the back dock, under the bridge and out into the Kennebunk River. Greg prefers kayaking, or his favorite, “I love cycling out Ocean Ave, past Walkers Point (home to the Presidential Bush family) and continuing out to Cape Porpoise and Goose Rocks Beach then back towards Kennebunk Beach – a loop passing a lighthouse and five Maine beaches, that’s pretty extraordinary.” Heather adds, “I love being able to walk to the Post Office, bank, market and local shops, plus we have half a dozen wonderful waterfront restaurants within a short stroll, it makes our cars almost unnecessary.”

While the home is incredibly historic, dating to 1901 when it was built by Reverend Durrell from Boston (he was a Free Mason and you will find subtle triangular Masonic signs throughout the exterior design especially in the 3rd floor "Presidential Suite") it feels quite contemporary. Despite being a century old, we, and previous owners, have improved upon many aspects of the home with updated bathrooms, creating the luxurious "Captain's Quarters" master suite and open concept kitchen in 2010 – both featuring walls of windows as if you are in the stern of a ship. A stately new carriage house was added in 2018 - bringing the convenience of a heated attached garage with a modern living space above with a deck – this contemporary en suite is perfect for an office or private bedroom hideaway.

"I love the fact that there is a water view out EVERY window in the house." commented Greg. While Heather notes, "I love EVERYTHING about this house, it has enduring character."

The perennial ever-blooming gardens of 82 Ocean are a highlight. From spring to fall, there are flowering trees, daffodils to lupine and day lilies, brilliant red Japanese maples, hydrangea, exotic pines and perfectly located shrubs. “I have a passion for landscaping and this home is a dream come true – the yard is not too big, its easy to maintain, surrounded by water and changing tides, and the constant blossoming is fantastic. The fire features (4 indoor and 4 outdoor) we added make it an oasis,” said Greg.

82 Ocean is a delightful cheerful home on the beautiful Kennebunk River, with a quiet cove out back. The dock here is state of the art, for sunbathing, swimming, and can accommodate canoes, kayaks, SUPS and water toys to float around and explore the calm peaceful tidal cove.

“There’s always a perfect place to be in this home,” says Heather. “You can follow the sun, and live incredibly grandly, yet each of the ten rooms offers an inviting cozy space that exudes a warm timeless energy.”

Greg and Heather note that as folks walk by this dramatic Ocean Ave home, the men all turn their gaze out to the river – admiring the water vista, beautiful boats and the pristine shores, while the women turn with envy to admire the grand Victorian house, its gardens and stunning classic architecture.
